When are XMP files used for storing metadata?

When working with proprietary RAW formats, we face the challenge that a lack of standardization unfortunately prevents us from writing metadata directly to the file. This is a common limitation in the industry and is handled similarly by other products, such as Adobe Lightroom.

For DNGs and JPEGs, things are a little different. In these cases, we try to place the metadata directly in the file unless the "Always use sidecar files" option is enabled. However, writing metadata to a DNG may not succeed for various reasons. In such a case, a sidecar file is placed next to the DNG.

Since exporting metadata is disabled in the trial version of Excire Foto, we have exported metadata for a few selected photos (3x CR2 with filial file and a JPEG) and provided them in a ZIP file. These files can be used to check compatibility with other programs.

Additionally, we would like to point out a video that demonstrates exporting metadata from Excire Foto and importing it into Lightroom. This video provides further insight into the process and may help with any questions you may have: https://www.excire.com/manuals/ExcireFotoMeetsLrClassic01_720p.mov
