Switching from Windows to Mac (and vice versa): Create a new database in Excire Foto

When switching from a Windows computer to a Mac computer, you will need to recreate your Excire photo database and add your photos again. Unfortunately, the existing database cannot be transferred. This is mainly due to the different path conventions of the two operating systems.

Why can't the database be transferred?

Windows and macOS use different file path structures, which means that the paths saved in the Excire Foto database are no longer valid on the new system. For this reason, it is not possible to simply transfer the database.

What do you need to do?

1. Save metadata: To ensure that manually assigned keywords and other metadata are not lost, you should save them in the photos before the change. To do this, mark all photos and choose "Save metadata" from the menu.

2. Create a new database: Create a new Excire Photo database on your Mac. You can do this in the program under "File" -> "Create new database".

3. Import metadata: While the photos are being added, let Excire Photo read in the saved metadata again. For this to work, the option "Load keywords from photos" must be activated in the settings. This will transfer your previously saved keywords and other metadata back into the new database.

4. Add photos again: Add your photos to the new database. To do this, click on the "+ Add" button and select the directories in which your photos are stored.

5. Have photos analyzed: Have Excire Foto analyze your photos again when you add them in order to be able to use the automatic keywording and other functions.

Advantages of the rebuild

Although rebuilding the database can be time-consuming, it also offers advantages:
- Updated analysis: photos are analyzed using the latest version of Excire Foto, which can provide more accurate results (this only applies to major updates)
- Better organization: You have the opportunity to reorganize your photo collection and weed out any outdated or unnecessary photos.

We understand that this process can be time-consuming and thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions or need assistance, our support team will be happy to help.
