When switching between Excire Foto and other photo management applications, there are several things to keep in mind when loading and saving metadata. The basic settings are described in the article "Saving metadata and making it available to other applications". This article covers application-specific details.
Adobe Lightroom Classic
- For Excire Foto to read metadata from Lightroom, it must first be written to the file in Lightroom via Metadata → Save Metadata to File.
- Lightroom supports XMP sidecar files only for RAW formats, not for JPEGs. Therefore, the option "Always use sidecar files" must not be enabled in Excire Foto if you want to synchronize metadata between Excire Foto and Lightroom for JPEG files.
Capture One
- In Capture One, keywords must also be saved first before Excire Foto can read them.
- Older versions of Capture One always store metadata in XMP sidecar files. For Excire Foto to read these, the option "Always use sidecar files" must be enabled there.
- Capture One has a setting (tab "Image" → "Prefer sidecar XMP over embedded metadata") that is enabled by default. We recommend not changing this – it ensures that the metadata written by Excire Foto to sidecar files is correctly read by Capture One.
- Newer versions of Capture One offer similar settings to Excire Foto. These must be aligned so that both applications work consistently.
ACDSee
ACDSee stores keywords in its own proprietary metadata field (ACDSee) instead of the standardized field (dc-subject). Excire Foto only reads the standardized field – keywords written by ACDSee will therefore not be imported.
Windows Explorer
- Windows 10 and later: The Explorer writes keywords both to the Windows-specific field (
XPKeywords) and the standardized field (dc-subject). Excire Foto only reads the standardized field – this works without issues from Windows 10 onwards. - Older Windows versions: Earlier versions of Explorer only wrote to the Windows-specific field. Keywords written this way will not be read by Excire Foto.
When reading metadata, Excire Foto relies on the operating system's support for the respective image format. RAW formats from newer cameras may not yet be fully supported by Windows or macOS. Affected formats on Windows include for example ORF, CR3 and in some cases CR2.
Note: Microsoft offers a "Raw Image Extension" for Windows that allows such formats to be displayed in Explorer. While this extension allows Excire Foto to register and analyze the photos, it does not enable reading of their metadata.
For photos that have already been registered, metadata can be updated afterwards via Photo → Load Metadata, once the format is supported by the operating system.
Keyword hierarchies
Since there is no established standard for storing keyword hierarchies, hierarchical keywords from other applications are always imported by Excire Foto with a flat hierarchy – i.e. all levels as individual, equal keywords.
