Backing Up, Moving, and Restoring a Database

Where is the Excire Foto database located?

The default database of Excire Foto is located here:

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Excire Foto
  • Mac: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/excire-foto

Tip for Mac users: If the folder is not visible in Finder, press CMD + Shift + . (period) to show hidden directories.

The database consists of the following files and folders:

  • 1to1.exfoto
  • previews.exfoto
  • thumbnails.exfoto
  • excire_foto.local.db (as well as .db-shm and .db-wal, if present)
  • backend.db (as well as .db-shm and .db-wal, if present)

Backing up the database

Option 1 – Directly in Excire Foto

Go to the menu and select File → Manual Backup.

Option 2 – Manually

Close Excire Foto and copy all of the files and folders listed above to a safe location (e.g. an external hard drive or cloud storage).

Warning
Note: When updating to a new major version, the database may be migrated. This process cannot be undone. If in doubt, create a backup beforehand.

Moving the database

  1. If you are not using the default database, first switch to it via File → Open Database Folder → Open Default Database.
  2. Close Excire Foto.
  3. Navigate to the database directory mentioned above.
  4. Move all of the files and folders listed above to your desired location.
  5. Start Excire Foto and open the moved database via File → Open Database Folder → Select Database Folder.

Tip: If you are unsure, you can copy the files first and delete the originals later after verifying everything works correctly.

Restoring a backup

Option 1 – Directly in Excire Foto

Copy the backup folder to any location and then open it via File → Open Database Folder → Select Database Folder.

Option 2 – Manually

Close Excire Foto, copy the backed-up files back to the location of the currently used database, and restart the application.
